I managed to create a new SMB share but can't figure out how to access it from my Windows 10 laptop.

Can anyone suggest a simple step by step guide to setting it up?

I see my TRUENAS box from Windows under 'This PC' -> Network
but when selecting it I get a 'Windows Securty' popup asking me to enter my network credentials. I try using 'root'/'password' with which I can ssh into to the box from FreeBSD. It's a home network, so security s not an issue. Windows tells me this combination is incorrect. How can I tell if this is a Windows or Truenas security issue?
Is there something on Truenas which shows a logon attempt from Windows? I don't have a clue about Windows security so I may need to change something on Windows but don't know where to look.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

The root user is not allowed to access SMB shares. You need to create a dedicated user for your share.
