Installed a StarTech PEXESAT322I SATA card into my system (see sig). Using an SATA dock (which woks fine on my Windows system). My FREENAS system does not see the hard disk in the dock.

The disk should show up in my /dev folder. Right? And then I could mount it?

Cannot see the new drive in the GUI either.

Any ideas before I pull the card and try it in another system?

I do not see the card/drive in the BIOS either.

All the jumpers are set for external SATA.

I thought I read a post on these forums that indicated someone has success with this card. Some of the reviews on the web had posters saying they used it in a FREENAS system.

That was a different card with the Marvell 88SE9215 chipset. The one you listed above has the ASMEDIA ASM1061 chipset. You're in unknown territory with this card and likely will not be able to get it to work.

Read this entire thread for the thoughts of others and for the correct card to try. Just remember it's not a proven piece so consider yourself strictly in testing territory. I wouldn't trust any important data to it until it's proven.

OK. I will not waste anymore time on this card in a FREENAS system.

Thanks for the link.

Some Marvell chipsets (including the one in the HighPoint Rocket 640L, which I own) don't post unless a drive is attached when the system is powered on. I bet you didn't power on the dock until after you booted, right?

On other thing. From what I can tell, this card is a 2 port, either port can be internal or external
Meaning you may have to change jumpers, depending on the original configuration.

Check to make sure both ports are set to the eSATA ports.

The first try I did not have the eSATA device powered at boot. But the subsequent test I tried repeatedly. eSATA connections can be wobbly so I must have tried six time. No luck.

I checked the jumper\s and they were already set to external. Just got a new card at MicroCenter. Fixing to test now.

Installed the new card

StarTech PEXESATA2 with a Silicon Image SiI3132 chipset

Everything is working now. I see the external drive when I do a "View Disks".
