Do you have problems with disks NOT of this type: WD60EFRX-68L0BN1?
Those are the only type of WD drives I have in this FN configuration, so I cannot really answer that. I have toyed around with the idea of replacing these with Seagate drives but that is a 2-3K outlay in funds I have to take into consideration.

I think you just answered my question. Since you only have disks of type WD60EFRX-68L0BN1, you have not seen the problems on disks not of this type. This is good news for my theory, that these drives (WD60EFRX-68L0BN1) throws errors in certain configurations with out showing other signs of trouble (SMART errors etc.).

What backplane(s) are you using?

What if any plans do you have in mind with yours?

I'm planning on getting rid of the last drive of type WD60EFRX-68L0BN1 in my zpool. I have previously removed 3 drives of the same type because of a large amount of errors. Only today have I realised, that all of the drives are of type WD60EFRX-68L0BN1.

I was using the IBM M1015 (for 8 of the 10 drives) but I recently swapped it out for it's LSI counterpart; I thought I might have found a solution but the weekly scrub just caused a repair error on the new controller. I have also noticed that one of my other pools that is connected solely to the internal SATA ports are also generating a similar type of error; once again same model of drives that are in the other pool. What drives are you swapping in to replace these WD drives, just the other version of the WD RED 6TB?

I'm seeing the EXACT same thing. I have seen the errors on different HBA's and also using the onboard SATA port.

Seems like the problem occurs on disks of type WX11DC61YDPV. Thus, I guess I could replace it with any other WD 6TB disk. See the following quote which includes a list of all the disks in my system.

I made a script listing the most interesting (in this regard) data from each drive. I think I have finally found something (I'm exited!).

The drive with the highest occurence of errors (da3/WX11DC61YDPV) is the ONLY drive of device type WDC WD60EFRX-68L0BN1. But wait, there's more: 3 drives i have previously pulled from the server because of high frequency of errors, are ALL of that same type (WDC WD60EFRX-68L0BN1).

I have offlined the disk i suspect (da3/WX11DC61YDPV) and started a scrub.

These are the data (from smartctl) for all my disks (In the system):

As for my disks:
I noticed you have one of the GOLD 6TB drives; what kind of temps are you seeing from that drive? I specifically went with the 5400 RPM drives because of temp considerations, but in general I prefer the 7200 variety. I have RED PROs in a non FN system and they have been rock solid for years now :)

Your problem could be that your drives are over heating. Any time you get into the 50-60s things get strange. Ideally you need to keep your drive temps under 40c for longevity reasons. But under 50c should be there safe threshold for overheating.

Actually the problem he is having is the same I am having and my drives haven't exceeded 38'C at anytime. These Western Digital Red 6TB drives are problematic, plain and simple. He was just showing me the drives he has, the GOLDS have not caused him any issues to my knowledge; I believe he is replacing the problematic REDS with the GOLDS; unfortunately the GOLDS are 7200 RPM and heating up more.

I decided to take another crack with Western Digital Support and after providing my evidence they now agree the one drive I submitted data on is indeed defective and eligible for replacement. I have emailed them a third time to advise that while I submitted data for one drive, I am in fact experiencing this issue on 8 of the 10 drives purchased earlier this year. I want to see if they agree that all eight drives are in fact duds and will agree to replace them. Assuming they will replace them, I am planning to buy new drives for now to rebuild the pools, but I don't think I am going to risk messing with the 5400 RPM drives this time. Either going to go with the new GOLD, the PRO REDS or an Hitachi NAS or Seagate NAS equivalents. I doubt I will be able to keep the temps in the mid thirties like the 5400's I have now, but I am not sure what alternatives I have. I wanted to update the community on the experience I have had with these particular REDS.
