I am new to FreeNAS and have a question that I have not been able to find the answer to. I want to use some old IDE drives I have, but I don't know what jumper setting to use. They are all different sizes so I thought about using them as JBOD if possible and then using a SATA drive to mirror them or as backup. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Even if you think it won't work or is just too crazy, that's all right.

Have you read Cyberjock's guide, linked in my sig? That is not going to work. You could hack something toigether, but the experience would be far from positive.

If they really matter (IIRC, in PATA's mid to later years no drive particularly cared), they'll be explained on the drive labels.

Considering size of your IDE drives, the trouble to get them going, and the cost of used (or new) sata ones? Wouldn't you be better off getting a couple old sata for testing? Please see the resources tab that @Ericloewe keep to have an idea of recommended hardware.

Edit: Don't be like me and end up with 16 2TiB HDs laying around. Try to see what is your final goal ;)

...and I'd add that any hardware that's still using PATA disks is unlikely to be anywhere close to suitable for FreeNAS.
Thanks, that's kinda what I expected to hear. It was just a thought, I hate throwing away these hard drives even if they are old.

WISH I had any TiB drives laying around! I do have a final goal in mind. I want to transfer my old VHS tapes, my old Lp's, and cooking recipes, etc. to a central location for access from my laptop/tablet or home entertainment system respectavly. Mostly the entertainment system though.
