I currently have one 9211-8i SAS/SATA controller cards and about to add a second. I am always very nervous when messing around with firmware updates and now that I have two cards, I just realized, I don't want to bork the old card and trying to remember the process (done years ago). Considering this is the second card, how do I make sure I'm updating the proper card? Should I disconnect SAS cables from the card when I do it or leave them plugged into drives? I just want to make sure everything works properly when I install everything and to make sure the new card has the proper firmware, as I don't know what comes installed... isn't it normally the IR version?

the easiest way is to do the update in another system. short of that, disconnect cables to drives and remove all PCIE cards but the one to be updated. it is not generally recommended to do firmware updates with drives connected to begin with.
