Motherboard with two GbE LAN ports

Hi,

I brought a motherboard with two Intel GbE LAN ports. How I can use both of them for having a bandwidth capacity of 2 Gbps? It is possible to do such thing? I see an Link Aggregation option in the FreeNAS UI, but im not sure which protocol to use.

Realistically, link aggregation isn't going to give you anything. Linkagg is not like doubling the speed limit on a road, it's like adding a second lane. If you only have one car, you won't get to your destination any faster.

How many clients are you going to have connected to your FreeNAS server? Unless you have more than a dozen clients (or you regularly have three or four connecting simultaneously), I don't think link aggregation is worth the time to set it up. If you really want to speed up your connection, get a 10Gbe network adapter and switch.

that's not link aggregation or LACP...that would just be 2 different nics on 2 different IPs....not even close to the same thing.

But can using separate IPs on separate NICs be used to achieve the same effect of LACP? Sorry for the dumb question but I am very new to freenas

No. That's not how LACP or link aggregation works.

We have lots of threads about this topic already, but this isn't really a freenas thing, its really just basic networking.

Yes.

Keep in mind that you can not configure two IP Address in Freenas in the same network. They must be in different subnets.
