I hope I have the right terminology here!

Ok so I started a fresh with my freenas install and re-imported the volume, I assumed all was ok but then I noticed my TV dataset was missing, I wasnt too concerned with the contents so I tried to add a new TV dataset only to be told that the path /mnt/Media/TV already exists.

I can browse to this location via FTP and the contents are there, but I cant recreate a SMB share to this dataset to view the files on my kodi box.

Is there anyway to sort this or do i have to start a new dataset?

Kinda hard to help with the limited info you provided.
My understanding so far: New FreeNAS install, imported old FreeNAS pool, discovered missing dataset but found a folder with matching name. Is that right? Did the old build have any other pools?

For starters please provide the outputs of the following commands in code tags:
zpool list -v
ls -lah /mnt
for((i=1;i<=10;i+=2)); do echo "derp $i times"; done

Urm... What does derp $i times do??
Code:
[root@FreeNAS ~]# for((i=1;i<=10;i+=2)); do echo "derp $i times"; done
derp 1 times
derp 3 times
derp 5 times
derp 7 times
derp 9 times
[root@FreeNAS ~]#

Sometimes when I have nothing to do I tell people to do meaningless things... It's cheap entertainment.

Looks good. You just have the two drives? I should have asked for zfs list -v and ls -lah /mnt/Media.
Sorry about that.

And for some reason I always thing zfs list has a -v but it does not... I just tend to tack -v onto everything. Try zfs list. Now I'm the Derp.

That's what I needed!
So it looks like you have a TV folder on your "root" data set Media/ (/mnt/Media/TV) but not a TV dataset. This is why you cant add a new TV dataset, the name is taken by the folder.
I can't recreate a SMB share to this dataset to view the files on my kodi box.
What error do you get when trying to add a SMB share? It looks like the permissions are wide open to anyone and everyone. I know you can share a folder on the root dataset as thats where I have my public share setup. (sloppy and needs to be fixed but I'm lazy)

Ah yes ok... Well embarrassingly I didnt actually try to create the SMB share since wiping freenas  I got as far as trying to create the dataset (basically following my instructions) I hit the error and thought i'd lost it all. It was only by chance whilst FTP'ing that I realised I could see the content and knew I still had the data.

Ok so i guess my question SHOULD be, why do I no longer have the TV dataset and does it actually matter? I am assuming it should matter as I cant properly control the permissions and I would like to rectify that.

I have just created the SMB share for TV although i cant browse it till I get home so not sure if it has worked or not? Scratch that it has worked

Sure you can. You can modify the rot dataset permissions or use the cli to set simple permissions. If you did have a tv dataset before it's possible it was "Tv" or "tv" as they would not match "TV". You can always add "tv" and move the contents over via cp -R /mnt/Media/TV /mnt/Media/tv then once you verify your files are moved and safe, rm /mnt/Media/TV and rename the new dataset to TV.

Personally I like having things in their own datasets for snapshotting and general manageability. But I don't because I'm lazy :D

OK cool I have just done that this morning. Had a few issues such as the new 'tv' folder ended up having a 'TV' subfolder inside with all the content. That was easy to sort.

Also had problems removing the old directory so ended up using this command after CD'ing to the /mnt/Media directory. sudo rm -rf TV/ that removed the folder just fine.

Cant see how to rename the dataset? but I have gone ahead and re-created the SMB share and can see the files just fine.

Do you know what, I think my Nas is setup lovely now :)

I have a similar situation and problem. My FreeNAS 9.3 server ceased to work after a power outage. A brief search suggested that a defective flash drive might cause the problem, so I decided to use a different flash drive and install the latest version of FreeNAS (11.1) on it. I finally found the cause for an unable to locate drive as a signal cable that had come loose. After finally getting the FreeNAS server visible in Windows 10 File Explorer, I can only see limited folders and files (all under the Movies folder).

I only have one SMB share at this point for the root of the ZFS volume (i.e., /mnt/Shared_Storage). Perhaps I need more. When I try to add a datashare for "Movies" to the Media datashare, I get the message "The path /mnt/Shared_Storage/Media/Movies already exists." Likewise when I try to add "TV Shows".

What do I need to do to get things working again? I have attached a file with shell output showing what the system looks like.

"Yarn pictures"
You have the most exciting files I have ever seen!
Sorry I have nothing to add. I just thought that was a funny folder name.

Thanks, I just did that. I do not know how to provide the smb config information you requested.
