Memory from Different Manufacturers

Hi folks. I know that mixing DIMMS of different sizes and manufacturers is not ideal or recommended, but I thought I would ask the question to see if there is anything I need to look out for. I have a new FreeNAS build based around a Super Micro X10SL7-F. I have 16GB of Crucial Model CT2KIT102472BD160B installed. I also happen to have a SUPERMICRO MBD-A1SAM-2550F-O that I was using for PFsense. That board had an issue and I ended RMAing it. The RAM I had on that board was 8GB of Kingston Model KVR16LE11S8/4KF. So I ended up adding this RAM to the FreeNAS machine and all works fine with a total of 24 GB. What are the drawbacks of this arrangement and should I looking for something specific to see if is an acceptable configuration or not. Many thanks in advance for the assistance. FreeNAS and this community are really superb! Sorry, I should have said that both pairs of RAM are ECC.

Hi theaddies,

I use the same motherboard with 2 kingston and 2 samsung ECC RAM modules without problems. But according to this post modules on the same channel should be matched.

You just can't use 4 Kingston Modules because the motherboard won't POST, all other configurations should work.

The ultimate tests for "acceptable configuration" are whether or not it is listed as the correct type and/or exceeds any limits specified by the manual or chipset documentation, and whether or not any errors show up during a few weeks of stress testing (i.e. with memtest86 or similar). If it passes all that, it should be just dandy.

Matched RAM is preferred, but it's been a while since non-matched DIMMs has caused problems.
