An Atom D525 is limited to 4GB of RAM. TrueNAS wants 16GB of RAM, and absolutely needs 8GB, in order to be stable. Having too little RAM is a problem in several dimensions, and can cause issues with the middleware crashing and other bad things happening.

FreeNAS gets security updates through the process of new releases. FreeNAS is now deprecated and has been replaced by TrueNAS Core. You should be running TrueNAS Core 12.0-U8 in order to be up to date.

FreeNAS has had a minimum memory requirement of 8GB for about a decade. I should know, I was the one who put that in the manual all those years ago. It may run on less, but there can be issues with the middleware crashing, stuff swapping, and in the old days, sometimes pool corruptions. I suspect that last is no longer an issue, but, who knows.
