Many hours to boot

Hope someone has some ideas on this- bootup takes hours, the errors I see whilst booting are similar to this:

Timeout waiting for write DRQ

I get this with just 3 drives: ata2, ata3, ata4.

Specification:

ASUS a8n32sli deluxe motherboard.
4 x 1.5TB Samsung Spinpoint F2EG drives attached to ICH SATA ports on motherboard.
2GB DDR2 RAM.

This is my backup FreeNAS server, my primary is a far more modern specification and works perfectly.

Should I disable ix-ataidle?

I'd like to add that I'm using no APM features for the drives.

Version is 8.0.1 Beta 4.

Any clues please?
