Making changes to Windows (CIFS) shares taking a long time?

I'm still in the evaluation period of FREENAS.

So, I have created a volume then shared that volume using Windows (CIFS) share. Next, I created Datasets within that volume. NO BIG DEAL...Basic!

However, anytime I make changes to those Dataset shares it takes a really long time for the changes to take affect (like a day). For instance, as soon as I created those Datasets, I couldn't copy anything to them even with full access to Owner, Group & Other.

The only thing I can thing of is that the FREENAS is slow to make changes because I'm not using the recommended RAM (4GB instead of 8GB). Is this really my issue?

8 GB is required not recommended. That could definitely be the cause of your slowdowns and could result in loss of data. If you are short on RAM I suspect the rest of your system may be lacking also and causing bad behavior. What are your full specs?

It's an old Dell Dimension 9100 Click Here

The owners manual states that it only supports a maximum of 4GB of RAM. Guess I'm out of luck....

Yeah not an appropriate system for FreeNAS. You would do better with a Linux distro.

lol, a pc from 2005. do yourself a favour. next time starting a project: start reading the manuals. freenas is no project to recycle your old hardware. we are talking about >8gb ecc ram, a sas hba, a modern cpu and enough time to educate yourself regarding zfs.

You might try NAS4free (www.nas4free.org).

More than likely, you discovered FreeNAS after reading about it online. FreeNAS 0.7 became NAS4free and iXsystems bought the name and developed newer versions (8.x & 9.x) that require significantly more resources than the old project.
