The price is quite different. Can I simply use the ECC RAM for Mac instead of the Server ECC?

ECC RAM is basically "server grade" because desktops don't use it. That's all. Now if some company is trying to brand something as "for Mac" or something, that's an issue you'd have to ask the marketing department of the given company.

Do keep in mind that to use ECC RAM you must have a CPU and motherboard chipset that supports ECC RAM. So unless your machine has a server chipset (C200, C202, etc.) then you aren't going to get ECC just by putting in ECC RAM.

Registered is a different way to differentiate RAM. Registered RAM has a register, and to use registered RAM you typically need a high-end server motherboard. Your motherboard manual will tell you if you need registered or unregistered.

Google something like Mac Pro $_Model_Year RAM requirements

Naturally, people jump at the opportunity of slapping "FOR MAC!" on their products and upping the price by 10%.

Memory manufacturers may also have RAM selection wizards for you to use.
