LOST ZPOOL, PLEASE HELP

Hi ,

I was working on adding extra storage to my NAS and I didn't unmount one of the drives that I removed and now my data has become inaccessible

Please help me recover HDD1

Have you tried shutting it off, reconnecting the drive, and then restarting?

Yes I Have that was actually my first step.

Is there a second drive you were working with? Perhaps you added it to the pool and didn't realize it?

Yes it was a removable USB that I was trying to add

Yes I removed it and cleared it. I didn't realize that I had mounted the drive to HDD1

You can try hexdump -C /dev/da0 |grep "0c b1"

How was the drive added? If it was as a single drive into a single vdev added to the pool, you've effectively wrecked the pool (inc other drive's content) once you removed the drive and wiped it.

Was it overwritten with random? If so, it does look like it is probably gone. You can try

head -c15000000 /dev/da0 | hexdump -C | grep "0c b1 ba 00"

for a more precise look.

If the USB is gone, your quickest route to any data is going to be something like testdisk 7.0 or other file recovery software. Since your disk was a single element, most files are stored in an intelligible way. File names will be lost. A full ZFS recovery is possible, but not practical in the year 2017. So you may want to set the drive aside after you recover what you can with file recovery.
