Long over-due update - chain of updates?

I've had a FreeNAS working flawlessly for years, but it has now stopped sharing. To the best of my limited research capabilities it's because I'm accessing the share from a Windows10 machine and SMB1 is what is used on the FreeNAS version I'm running (8.3.0-RC1-x64). Are there critical build steps I have to go through to get the system updated, or can I jump to the latest, or even TrueNAS from 8.3.0-RC1?

I know the NAS is online because I can ping it by IP address. I've also seen all hard drives are working and the RAID is healthy. I can see the Windows CIFS share when I access the NAS through the GUI.

Thanks for anyone who can help or advise. I probably should have updated long ago, but often if it isn't broken I don't want to risk breaking it in an update.

NO. You can't just jump to the latest version... Most likely... Depends on exactly what you are doing with your system.

You have been using a RC (Release Candidate) version for a very, VERY long time.

Just to give you some idea how far behind your system is, these are the releases since the one you are using.

There is a way forward, but don't try to jump all the way to the latest version unless you want to build a whole new NAS and just copy your data over.

Which versions you need to go to for a successful upgrade, it depends on what things you are doing with your system?

Failure to update can also break things, but it is fairly impressive that you have been on that version for so very long.

Do you have jails setup? We need details to have some idea what will get broken in an update.

Thank you for your prompt and detailed reply. Your information confirms what I feared . . . likely a lengthy series of updates versus wiping the system and starting fresh (which sounds like an easier approach).

As a fairly non-fluent FreeNAS user can you help me know how to backup my data to another source so I can start over fresh?

No jails set up. Not even sure what that means (sorry).

The only issue I have is I can't access my share anymore. Best I can tell it's because of an outdated security protocol (NMB1?) or something.

As a circumvention, you could enable SMB1 client in Windows 10. Search for "windows 10 smb1 enable".

I appreciate your willingness to help. Here's what the system is:
Build: FreNAS-8.3.09-RC1-x64 (r12617)
Platform: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120T cpu @ 2.60GHz
Memory: 8076MB
Volume: 5.2TiB Healthy in Raid-z 1-0 configuration, 149.3 GiB used, 4 Western Digital Drives at 1TB/ea, each drive shows online

I don't have any backup of the current data. This NAS is a backup for things at home in general.

I'm guessing (don't know for sure) that if I temporarily enable SMB 1.0/CIFS Client I'll be able to access the data and make a backup, but I'm not sure about that. I'm guessing and hoping there's a way to mirror the volume onto another drive somewhere on the network, but I really don't know much about this.
