I am looking to replace my FTP server, but before I do that I need to find something that is very user friendly. The simplest interface I can think of would be to allow the user to click on a link on our website and we allow them to upload from what ever OS they are on. Another option would be to open a window that would allow the customer to drag and drop the file to be uploaded.

Has anyone done anything like this with freenas?

I am thinking that once the file arrives on the server a service would move it to a new location and then send an e-mail link to the team that needs it.

With such requirements, I have seen HTTP or HTTPS being used (likely with a Java uploader) and not FTP.

Just my experience, not information on availability of a solution you desire.

I'm not familiar with any programs that do exactly what you want. But with a FreeNAS jail you can run anything as if it were FreeBSD. I have no doubt that something will do what you want, but I have no name. So the only advice I can give is to search for a program listed in the pkg-ng repository or ports for something that does what you want. Then install it and configure it.

This is NOT going to be something that comes easy unless you've got experience with ports and/or pkg-ng. I'm guessing you don't from the question you are asking, so this is going to take you 2-3 weeks to figure out.

I actually have been looking at this for awhile. The reason I don't use HTTP is the files are large which makes it unreliable. I used FTP in the first place because i thought it was easy and you can download an FTP Client most anywhere. Well it turned out our customers have issues with that, so i am trying to make it even more simple. Kind of like put you big file here, now flush. I know some of our customers get dropbox, but i didn't see anything that said Freenas can support that type of operation.

Thanks for the input

FreeNAS itself, out of the box does not.

You will need to create a jail, then install a program that can do what you want using ports or pkg-ng. That's why I mentioned jails, ports, and pkg-ng.

Just out of curiosity, what is a large file for you? 2 GB ? 20 GB ? 200 GB ?

The issue you are facing is real, the solutions, I am familiar with (HTTP/HTTPS based), are not open source and often require a Java applet in order to be able to monitor/manage HTTP transfers/uploads.

If torrents were not associated with whatever, I would recommend that you consider an option of using your own private torrents for transmitting the files. Clean and simple.
