Hello all.

I'm new to FreeNAS and I have just installed FreeNAS 9.10-STABLE on a HP MicroServer gen8.

I have set up samba to share for 2 folders.
  • /mnt/pri/main -> Private
  • /mnt/pri/main/shared -> Shared
Where /mnt/pri/main is a dataset on /mnt/pri.

I intend to give everyone besides the owner and group to have read and browse access only on Shared.
And I want to hide Private and deny read and browse access for everyone besides the owner and the group. Hence I run
setfacl -m everyone@:x:fd:allow /mnt/pri/main
I give everyone execute permission in order for other users to mount Shared through cifs.

However I have received the following message from the server this morning:

HP-MS-gen8.local kernel log messages:
> Failed to write core file for process smbd (error 14)
> pid 82434 (smbd), uid 0: exited on signal 6

Checking for packages with security vulnerabilities:
Database fetched: Wed Apr 13 03:34:02 HKT 2016
samba43-4.3.6_100312
pcre-8.38

-- End of security output --
What does it mean for "Failed to write core file for process smbd (error 14)"? How do I fix it?
And is my ACL set correctly?
Thank you very much!

It is running on
HP MicroServer gen8
Celeron G1610T
16GB ECC RAM
OS installed on Sandisk 32GB USB thumb drive
2 x 6GB Toshiba HDD MD04ADA600
The current OS is FreeNAS-9.10-STABLE-201604140622 (8781269).
However it was just updated this morning. The problem was happened on an version older.

The above problem was not reported again this morning before the update though.

That permissions config won't work with samba and zfsacls. Anyone accessing /mnt/PRI/main/shared will need read access to /mnt/PRI/main. I think at a minimum they will need 'read attributes' and 'read extended attributes'. Might also need 'read data' as well.

Thanks for the advice, anodos!

According to your advice, I shared another folder repo under Shared instead. Hence the other users may access repo. :)
