Jails with extra software pkg-installed, how do they fare from FreeNAS major upgrades?

Suppose I create a jail, do a few pkg installs inside that, and then I upgrade FreeNAS to 11...

Does the pkg installed extra software remain runnable? Does it, perhaps, upgrade with FreeNAS, even?

Generally your jail should be fine. There's a chance that kernel changes could lead to binaries failing to execute, but I personally haven't experienced that. I even seemed to avoid the issues people were experiencing where they couldn't install or upgrade packages because of the system mismatch.

The one issue I've run in to is my oldest 9.3 jails no longer being able to install updates because pkg support has been dropped. That mostly just means I need to rebuild those jails with a newer template. That's one of the appeals of Docker; rebuilding with newer packages is, or can, mostly be automated.
