I assume you're asking if you should use unix permissions for the jails dataset, if this was the point of your post, then yes typically unix permissions are what you'd use.

@Mlovelace You did! Thank you. I'd assumed that but had to be sure before proceeding.

This whole exercise is a very steep (and very worthwhile) learning curve for me - not just FreeNAS itself but computer stuff in general...
