All,

A fairly straightforward issue, but I would like comments from the community.

I have an old iXsystems Mini loaded with 11.2 that still runs like a champ. The plan was to put it in the Airstream, but it is too big for the space available. So I am considering repackaging it as follows:

I will reuse the Mini's motherboard, memory, SATA-DOM, etc.

Any comments or suggestions? Specifically:
  • Using SanDisk Ultras as a low cost SSD?
  • Is there any value to a ZIL and ARC with SSD?
  • Does anyone know of an alternative case with with the 14x12x6 package dimensions and an open 5" bay?

Now if I could only find a 12v source power supply...

Thanks!

You have a fascinating idea. However, I would be wary of that particular case. The reviews are not very good and cooling appears to be an issue. I saw some other small cases listed on Amazon, but they are a bit more expensive.

With regards to shock resistance, 2.5inch laptop disks are pretty good when powered down. If you are concerned with reliability when moving the trailer, I don't think disks versus SSD will be an issue. Your biggest problem will likely be related to cables coming unplugged, so secure them well.

If this is a media server, I would not bother with a Zil.

Let us know how it works.

Thanks - still looking for an alternative right-size case. So far, no joy.
This is is intended as a replication of non-archive portions of my exclusive-use file server in the office. Minimal media use. I will replicate down before departure and up when I return. I expect this approach to be faster and less problematic than a vpn from the boondocks would be!
