Is one vdev with 2 disks better than 2 vdevs with one disk each?

I only have one hard disk right now but I want to add more later for mirroring. In the documentation it says to add new drives to the pool you have to stripe them separately. Is this completely acceptable or is there an advantage to waiting until I have my next drive before I build the vdev? And for the 3rd and 4th drive etc?

Striping single drives is a very good way to send all your data to the bit bucket in the sky.
