Installation of additional utilities

Hi.

I need to install hashdeep on my FreeNAS.

Is it advisable to create a jail for such tools, and if so, will that survive a freenas upgrade? Or should I just add this to the base?

Don't install stuff to base. You could use a jail, though you'll have to install manually as there is no FreeBSD port for that tool.

Alternately, there are two built-in utilities which can be used for this purpose. Their use is described in http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/book.html#security-ids and http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.IS...sdupdate.html#freebsdupdate-system-comparison.

I need to use a tool that will also run on Windows.

So I've created a standard jail and I think I need to add storage to it, to access the zfs files outside of the jail, right? But I get this message:

I have no idea about the details or internals of your issue.

However it seems that: your Jail is not Ian, and it does not belong to group Ian... So unless you change either ownership or add Other permissions you will be getting the message in red.

I use it on windows and having it on my freenas as a command would be nce.

In a jail, have you tried to run "pkg install hashdeep"?
