Helped myself.

I thought 2 GB of space on the harddrive would be enough..probably not.

You could also try the following. Convert the full usb image to a vmdk. I use VirtualBox for testing and I am able to boot from the vmdk defined as SCSI boot hdd. In a window's command prompt or a BSD terminal use the VBoxManage convertfromraw command:

VBoxManage convertfromraw <filename> <outputfile>
[--format VDI|VMDK|VHD]
[--variant Standard,Fixed,Split2G,Stream,ESX]
[--uuid <uuid>]

But of course the Statutory Warning : Please do not run FreeNAS in production as a Virtual Machine!" :)
