Information unit iuCRC error detected

Memory 16gigs

6x3TB WD Reds on a LSI SAS 9211-8i in IT mode.

My console is spamming some errors all day long about once every 10 seconds. I'm not sure how to see this in putty to copy and paste it exactly so please see attached screeny for details.



I have all 6 drives in a zfs raidz2 configuration. The volume shows as healthy. However when I look at the disks status its not showing the serial for one of the drives. I'm not sure if this is related or not.


Should I be concerned about this and/or the error on my console?

You need to flash your controller with the version 16 IT firmware to match the FreeNAS driver.

IMMEDIATELY flash that card to P16 if you value your data! P20 firmware is known to be disastrous when used with FreeBSD's P16 driver.

Is my data going to survive the downgrade of the controller? Is there anything I need to be aware of while/after doing this?

Data shouldn't be affected. Just follow the flashing instructions (you'll probably have to clear the firmware before the flash tool will let you downgrade). I believe there's a guide on the forum that goes into more detail than the servethehome one.

The SN is still missing from that drive from the webGUI. Is this anything I should worry about.

As the user reported there my speed seemed to increase greatly as well now. My reads were awful at 10~20MB/sec and now they are solid ~75MB/sec

The single missing serial number is just a GUI bug, apparently. If smartctl -a /dev/adawhatever reports the serial number, you're fine.

The workaround to the GUI problem was mentioned recently on another thread:

Just leaving this information here to help anyone else researching iucrc errors.

I have been working with this problem for several years total now - it is intermittent and never caused any data loss, so I often ignored it. Every time it seemed resolve, it would poke its head up again in a month or so.

I found these items as the primary culprits behind this as mentioned by others:

1. Firmware revision on drive/raid controller and firmware rev used in OS driver are mismatched
2. Power Supply is flaky or under too much load
3. Drive Cabling loose or broken (makes intermittent connection)
4. drive backplane is faulty
5. drive itself is faulty (if only happening on 1 drive)

And the coup de grâce -
6. Drive/raid controller is faulty - in my case it threw no other errors and worked normally

Since this one can be caused by so many minor and intermittent external problems that have no testing mechanism, you are left to troubleshoot this one manually by swapping things (or if your lucky, you know what you changed).

After installing the FreeNAS-9.10-STABLE-201605021851 (35c85f7) this iuCRC error show up...

A simple cabling disconnect/connect solve the problem. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by disconnecting/reconnecting the cable? Do I do this hot/cold? Do I have to do it every time I boot the server? Please elaborate.

I just shut down the system, disconnect and reconnect the SAS/SATA cable. That's it. Error is gone. I just do it once. If error persist, maybe you got a different culprit as per slushienken's post.

Thanks for the quick reply. After doing more testing I've found the problem to be a result of PCIe passthrough of a 9211-8i (IT mode). Passthrough of a dumb(er) SATA controller resolves this. Tested passthrough on two hosts and both times issues were with the 9211-8i.
