Hey guys,

I found the procedure for replacing a bad drive, but I just wanted to verify that I need a new one before I head out to Fry's. I'm pretty sure it's dead.

####################

System config:
FreeNAS-8.0.3-RELEASE-p1-x64 (9591)
6x2 TB drives
FreeNAS running on a USB flash drive
Current uptime: 49 days

####################

Here are the diagnostics I found:

First of all, this drive has always been a bit iffy, silently corrupting my data on a couple of occasions.
Code:
	NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
	Neckbeard ONLINE 0 0 0
	  raidz1 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada0p2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada1p2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada2p2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada3p2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada4p2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada5p2 ONLINE 0 0 5

####################

My FreeNAS security log this morning had this little snippet in it:
Code:
neckbeard.local kernel log messages:
+++ /tmp/security.767iTVjr	2012-05-26 03:01:28.000000000 -0700
+(ada5:ahcich5:0:0:0): lost device

####################

Its serial number is now missing from the "View Disks" tab:

The zpool status GUI, which used to happily report the status of my drives, now simply shows this:

I was in this situation not too long ago. I shutdown the FreeNAS box. Unplugged the old drive, plugged in the new (no hot swap for me :( ), turned the machine back on, went back in to the View Disks tab and hit the Replace button on the bad drive. A dialogue box popped up showing me the available drives, where the new drive was listed. Selected the new drive and clicked OK. The warning light in the upper right of the web GUI stays flashing red until the new drive is populated with the data it needs to be useful.

hahaha

Whether or not this drive is actually dead or not, it sure seems to be (half-)dead to FreeNAS. So your best course of action is to pop in a replacement.

Please do read up on 'how to' before you start unplugging anything.

It would be nice to hear how the procedure went!
