I/O shield compatibility

Hello all!

I am "brand new" comer as a registered member in this forum but I have to admit that I already went through a few posts especially the ones related to the hardware recommendations.

The main purpose of my build is related to personal storage, back-up and probably future evolution when I think I will already be able to play around with those 2 features. I actually already have a WD EX2 Ultra but I really do not enjoy the experience with the interface which is, to me rather restrictive.

Based on those recommendations, I came up with the following base configuration :
Supermicro X10SL7-F
Intel XEON E3-1230v3 4C/8T 3.30GHZ 8MB
Crucial 8GB x2 Unbuffered EUDIMM

The following elements were coming from an old workstation :
Fractal Node 804
PSU
WD Blue 500Gb
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb

Of course the idea is to extend the pool of HDD to increase the storage capacity but this is just to play around and understand the system first.

After all those details, I finally arrive to my question. The Supermicro motherboard came with a I/O shield but the issue is that the area dedicated to this I/O shield on the Fractal Node 804 does not fit at all. Is it an issue powering on the system without the I/O shield either from an isolation or "dust" point of view? Do you think it is necessary to find an alternative to fill the gap?

I went through the Forum looking for such problem but I haven't seen something closely related. Here is a picture of the combination of both I/O shield and case. Note that not only the area is not matching at all but on top of that there is no possibility to fix the I/O shield properly.

Thank you all for your time and your contribution to all this fantastic documentation and the knowledges.

How did that happen? You got a custom Supermicro I/O Shield for their own chassis lines.

In any case, you can get a replacement, the part number is MCP-260-00073-0N and should be widely available (it's pretty generic for many/most Supermicro server boards). In the meantime, it's not the end of the world if you go without it until the new one arrives.

Actually this is probably my bad because I did not mention that it was for a "simple" case. I thought there was no difference to be honest ... did not even think it was possible to mention that detail  I bought the motherboard on ebay and the vendor did not mention that point neither.

Thanks for the reference, I will get a deeper look at it! As far ar I see the part is not expensive but the delivery costs are.

I already started the "beast" and it seems working fine so far ... meaning less than 8 hours

Thanks one more time.
