Hi, this is my first post on here so please be gentle...

I've just set up a build on an HP DL180g6 which has the P410 raid controller in it but looking online and using the search feature on here I'm getting conflicting information about if it is safe to use the P410 - some are saying it is safe to use and some say it is unsafe.

The DL180 g6 is a 2u chassis and has 14 drives, 2x 120gb with the boot pool mirrored, I then have 12 WD Red 6TB drives split into 3 pools, 1 pool of 6 drives, 1 of 4 drives, both on raidz2 and a mirrored pair for jails, etc. The system has twin Intel Xeon E5620 @ 2.40GHz and 32GB of ram.

If the P410 is unsafe to use what would you recommend to use instead and will 32GB of ram do or do I really need more?

It can be done, but the P410 uses the cisss driver which has been reported to have problems under load. You can disable the P410 and add an LSI 9207-8i for ~= $50 on eBay. That does assume you have an open PCI slot. I am not as familiar with the DL180, but I have done that on a DL360g6 and a DL380g6. You should be able to move the SAS cables from the P410 directly to the LSI card.

Do you mean disable the P410 or remove it and fit the LSI card in its place? I only have the 1 pci slot available which the P410 is using.

I was thinking that was an onboard controller. If that is a PCI card then yes, you would be removing that and replacing it with the 9207-8i. HP does OEM a flavor of that card, but I forget the model number. Your system might even think it was an HP card. Make sure you have the IT software up to the current level (20).
