Hello Professionals.

Today, the mother board seems to be broken down. There are 5 WD RED hard drives are attached with RAID6.
I need to replace the mother board, but I was wondering if there is any ways to check the hard drive data inside? I have back up file of FreeNAS, but I think the data might be gone when I setup FreeNAS with new mother board...

I really appreciate for your advice and help.

Hey Bravo,

When you say that your drives were in Raid6, do you mean they where in a hardware raid6 structure or if they were configured as RaidZ2, the term used in FreeNAS to describe a structure that can survive the loss of 2 drives just like Raid6 can ?

If your raid was hardware, you will need to plug your drive in an equivalent / compatible hardware raid controller to have a chance of mounting the logical drive without loosing your data.

If they were in RaidZ2, do not worry and just re-install FreeNAS. FreeNAS will find your pool and mount it without any problem.

Good luck,

Hi, Heracles

Thank you so much for your quick response! The current FreeNAS has been built with RaidZ2. This is software RAID.
So I just need to reinstall FreeNAS on new mother board without restore from backup file?? It works?

As long as you can boot the current boot drive for freenas in the new system then evertthing will/should be as you left it. As this wasn't a clean shutdown there may be an extra step to get the pool back on line but it should be fine
