Reinstall FreeNAS on a new 4Gb USB flash drive and restore your configuration file.

If you don't have a backup, you might be able to recover it from your old one. The file is named freenas-v1.db and is in the root directory of the 4th partion. The flash drive is formatted with UFS.

Thanks for the prompt response. Im still new to freenas structure tho. never ran the backup option from the qui itself. do i need to boot up as a single user mode using the usb key? or should i use the remix cd already and and start from there?

Hi ChuchayPatutay,

I think you might be making things more complex than you need to.

The first thing is a Linux rescue disk is likely to be useless for whatever it is you are trying to do because FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD, so odds are it won't be able to read the USB key file system.

If your boot key got corrupted just install FreeNAS to a usb key (ideally a different one, if you want to try to get your old config ) and boot it. you should be able to import your storage & get on with life. Honestly it might be quicker to just configure a new key rather than trying to recover your old config, but you will learn quite a bit about FreeBSD\NAS if you do try to recover it.

No, as long as you import the existing volume, it won't format the disks.

No, don't "redo your raid 10 setup" or ???. This will destroy your data.

From the manual ...

If you click Storage → Volumes → Auto Import Volume, you can configure FreeNAS® to use an
existing software UFS or ZFS RAID volume. This action is typically performed when an existing
FreeNAS® system is re-installed (rather than upgraded). Since the operating system is separate from
the disks, a new installation does not affect the data on the disks; however, the new operating system
needs to be configured to use the existing volume.

Supported volumes are UFS GEOM stripes (RAID0), UFS GEOM mirrors (RAID1), UFS GEOM
RAID3, as well as existing ZFS pools.

hi guys, just an update. i was in the middle of installing the freenas yesterday on a new usb drive with the same img that i have installed before. the problem is after the freenas splash screen where you can choose option like single user etc.. it wont go thru the installation process.. :( it keeps on booting until ill go to the error msg :

Mounting from ufs:/dev/FreeNASs1a failed with the error 19

Loader variables:
vfs.root.mount from ufs:/dev/ufs/FreeNAss1a
vfs.root.mount from options=ro

with the prompt:

mountroot> (if i will press enter without any inputs it goes to this this prompt:)

You might have to disable USB3 on your motherboard, just like a ton of error 19 thread say to do from 9.1 and 9.1.1. If you try 9.2.0 and it still throws the error 19 then USB3 is not your problem.

The manual goes through the auto-importing process. doc.freenas.org.

So you do "zpool import" and you get no output at all? If not, then you have major problems because that means FreeNAS couldn't find any unmounted pools in any condition(mountable or unmountable). We call this a "bad thing"(TM) and you should go looking for your backups.

Nope. You get the data off the drive by mounting the pool. That's why I say in my noobie guide that "no zfs recovery tools exist". I offer data recovery services on a case-by-case basis. If you want to go this route you should PM me. You also should shutdown the server and not use it anymore as you could be unintentionally making things worse...
