How to disconnect an external USB / DVD drive?

Hi,
I have an external DVD drive which is connected to the FreeNAS box through a USB cable. Freenas recognizes it OK and works just fine. However, how do I disconnect the drive without crashing it? Once the drive is active if I unplug it or turn it off Freenas recognizes the change, issues a message saying that it will remove the device and crashes with a Trap 12.

Hi Globus999,

Make sure all partitions are unmounted and not in use.
