Hello

I am new for FreeNAS forum, recently we upgraded from FreeNAS 8.3 to 9.1.1, everything working fine, but i want to take backup from FreeNAS to my external USB 3.0 hard drive. when i connected USB 3.0 external hardrive, nothing showing in web GUI

hoping that required to update USB 3.0 motherboard drivers, kindly suggest.

If your intention is to backup to the USB drive, you will need to mount it from Shell first. Its devicename should start with /dev/da* (e.g. /dev/da0s1).

Thanks for your reply,

we are currently using FreeNAS in production environment, everyday all our servers backup storing in FreeNAS. Disaster point of view we planned to to take all our backups into two external hard drive, one will be connect to FreeNAS and another will be outside on daily practice.
My concern is when i connected to USB 3.0 port on motherboard, the external hard drive not detecting, assuming that i need to update motherboard drivers

kindly suggest.

Right. You'll need to find the FreeBSD drivers for your USB controller and possibly recompile FreeNAS. This isn't something for the timid and my guess is that since you are asking how to add the drives you definitely don't have the experience to do this on your own.

Your best bet is to get a USB addon card that is supported in FreeNAS(search the forums for someone that added one and/or use the FreeBSD 9.1 hardware support list) and put in a request at bugs.freenas.org to have support for yours added assuming you can provide a link to the drivers for the developers to implement. Generally, if it isn't supported out of the box there's a very good chance its not supported in FreeBSD at all.

xhci is the only USB3.0 driver in FreeBSD and it's included.

You did not provide your HW details as the forum rules require (board, chipset, ...) so it's hard to check if your HW is supported. Could you please provide output of dmesg and usbconfig after you plug in the drive?

What drive are you trying to connect? A 500 GB Transcend StoreJet?

Your USB3.0 controller is recognized and the drive was properly connected as da1 once:
[PANEL]ugen0.3: <StoreJet Transcend> at usbus0
umass1: <StoreJet Transcend StoreJet Transcend, class 0/0, rev 2.00/0.02, addr 2> on usbus0

Something is messed up right now, but I'm quite sure that if you reboot and connect the drive it will appear here: Storage->Volumes->View Disks.

Here you can see that it was connected to usbus0:
[PANEL]ugen0.3: <StoreJet Transcend> at usbus0
umass1: <StoreJet Transcend StoreJet Transcend, class 0/0, rev 2.00/0.02, addr 2> on usbus0
da1 at umass-sim1 bus 1 scbus7 target 0 lun 0
da1: <StoreJet Transcend GN00> Fixed Direct Access SCSI-2 device
da1: 40.000MB/s transfers
da1: 476940MB (976773168 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 60801C)
da1: quirks=0x2<NO_6_BYTE>[/PANEL]
usbus0 seems to be USB3.0 in your case:
[PANEL]xhci0: <Intel Lynx Point USB 3.0 controller> mem 0xde500000-0xde50ffff irq 16 at device 20.0 on pci0
xhci0: 32 byte context size.
usbus0 on xhci0[/PANEL]
