I built a system with specs below, installed FreeNAS, a jail with phpVirtualBox Template, Debian as a VM, compiled minidlna for Debian. All good up to this point. My question is, can someone recommend the best method to make all my media files accessible to minidlna for streaming? I have a CIFS that my windows machine where the media files are can access but can't find a way to make them accessible to minidlna. Thank you for your help.

Why not just run minidlna within a jail and not within a VM?.. The VM should be able to access shares.. See the virtual box config page..

Thank you for the reply. I did try minidlna within a jail, following the instructions on this forum, and worked fine but wanted a different icon on dlna clients. I did try VM share method and kind of got it to work but the media files don't show on dlna clients. It might be a permissions issue. The minidlna.log on debug mode doesn't show any errors so I'm stuck right now.

If you want to use DLNA, have you considered Emby? It has a DLNA server within it, and it comes in a prepackaged plugin for FreeNAS. Plex might have a similar DLNA server within it, but I can't speak to that.

Plex does include a DLNA server

You're welcome!
The users here have pretty extensive experience with both the Emby and Plex plugins, so that should make your life a little easier than attempting to go with a custom solution. If you have any troubles with them, you can pop over here for some assistance.
