SOLVED HOST name not found

Server IP goes to the Supermicro GUI no the FreeNAS GUI

Did you try searching for that text in the search box of the forums? The very common cause of that has been *very* well documented here already...

cyberjock, I figured my issue was something simple and that it would be the noob question that all the old timers roll their eyes when they see... I've spent time on forums where I'm a SME, so I'm really trying not to be "THAT guy".

I've searched here, on google, and on youtube several times and I can't figure out how to fix the issue. From my reading it seems the computer can't find the DNS server... I have the primary and secondary DNS from my router but the system shows now change after I plug either in the SuperMicro GUI and restart the server. Some of the threads seems to include some diagnostics "ipconfig>paste results etc..." (here are my ipconfig results https://www.dropbox.com/s/59h3yaf06diupcv/ipconfig.JPG ). I don't know what I'm missing. I draw some of my assumptions from this thread http://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/default-host-name-host-name-not-found.14749/ but I still havent found "10 easy steps to Assign DNS when host name is not found". In the above referenced thread "pirateghost" gives hints for what I assume is the FreeNAS GUI but when I type in my servers IP, I get the SuperMicro GUI.

Any help is much appreciated!

If you look at your screenshot, neither em0 or em0 has an IP address. In addition to an IP address, you'll need a subnet mask, gateway address and your DNS entries. You can set all of these values using the console setup menu.

Do you have a DHCP server? If so, perhaps it might be easier to grab the addresses via DHCP and then change it to a static address.

Well, em0 and em1 are nocarrier.. that is.. they have no network link...

So that would be a very very good reason why it can't find a DNS server...
So how are you accessing the WebGUI since I don't see any immediate way to actually access it to change the settings...

Thank you guys for the replies! I think the network sees the server but the server doesn't see the network. if that's possible...

Web GUI im not able to access the FreeNAS WebGUI. when I enter the IP it goes to the SuperMicro (motherboard) WebGUI where I can log in and admin the server with a Java client for command line

You know, if you had said that the WebGUI didn't work in the beginning this would have been the most important piece of information.

If you check out the manual it says to bootup freenas and go to the IP. There's no IP because there's no network.

All those screenshots mean nothing because I'm not able to look at your infrastructure. What you need to know is this:

FreeNAS sees 2 Intel network adapters. Neither one has a carrier. That is to say, it doesn't even negotiate a network speed. Literally "no carrier" means the same thing as "I didn't plug in my network cable".

So you need to stop, go back and look at your infrastructure. As long as you have no carrier you aren't going to go anywhere, ever. That's your primary problem and you're going to have to trace cables, try different cables, etc.

Sorry, but thta's all the help you're going to get from here as this is not a FreeNAS problem but a networking problem.

Oh perfect! i switched the ethernet cable from the one near the serial port to the middle plug and it gave me an IP that goes to the WebGUI!

You need two cables: One connected to the IPMI's port (the one with the USB ports) and one connected to the Intel adapters (one of the other two). You do not need the first one if you do not plan to use IPMI (why you wouldn't use IPMI is beyond me).
