Hi,

This will be my first build, which have been on my mind at least for few years.

I also have read "Hardware recommendations" (new and old).

For now I’m running old (320GB) four drive RAID5 for pictures and videos and one 1.5TB for back up.

ZFS and FreeNAS is completely new thing for me, and one reason I want to do this is for learning purpose. For now I still don't want to get to many difficulties for just testing and learning so I kind of need verification that the direction is right.

For now I got already EXTRA

  • i3 3225 (From HW recommendations - is enough for me and got ECC)
  • Thermalright True Spirit for the rock.
  • KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G (didn't have read that Kingstone aren't anymore recommended)
  • and Asus P8B WS (It's free - should I replace it with Supermicro tex. X9SCM-B? The problem isn't the price but the availability in Europe)
  • Corsair AX760, I got it from RMA (replaced because of coil whine) It’s too big but should be good at least for start.
Should I still hunt that old supermicro or just sell the rock, memory and mb and buy supermicro, new xeon and QVL memory? Kind of want to play safe but don't want to waste money.

What I'm planning to get is
  • "Some used ATX case" - fans (gentle typhoon AP-15) I already got plenty. Them I'm going to put in front of HDDs and that should be sufficient cool the rest of the case. Probably Fractal Design R3-R4 or other equivalent.
  • Planning to get first 2x 3TB WD reds e.(WD30EFRX for mirroring and later probably 4 more and make RAIDz2 with 6 drives.) Bropaply going just add more Mirroring disks when needed.
  • USB Flash changed to Sandisk Cruzer Force e.(Kingston DataTraveler SE9.)
Some opinion - Thank you!

(I'm sorry for the grammar mistakes and poor language skills)

it's a good start. the board supports ECC and onboard graphics as well. but once you've used Supermicros IPMI, you'll never want anything else. ;)

For the USB-Stick I'd get anything Sandisk with 8, better 16GB and USB3 if the latter isn't adding much to the bill.

I would buy supermicro x9 motherboard and save rest money on UPS, if you dont already have.
Edit: and for i guess tex. X9SCM-B dont have IPMI you really should get like X9SCL-F witch has IPMI

Hmm, TY.

UPS have been on my mind, but
I'm not concerned about the uptime. I just don't want to lose data on sudden powerloss, so UPS is only needed for safe shut down on sudden power loss.
Would this be good reliable choice for that purpose?? http://powerquality.eaton.com/ELP650IEC.aspx?cx=42&GUID=39800EDA-F58C-439F-BCD6-6F6C54E7B152
Considering that "if I update RAM to 32GB, CPU to E3-1230 V2 and HDDs to 6kpl tex 2 x 3TB, 2 x 6TB and 2x 10TB if that NAS is going to get with me that long :D

The more I read about RAIDz the more I'm sure I need to go with the mirroring.
I estimate that my data usage need is going to be about 2TB late 2015, 4TB 2016 and furher its impossible to know. So RAIDz2 with "bang for the buck" 3TB WD Reds don't make much sens to me with my needs?

Yes, it seems that the supermicro model that I should get is X9SCL-F - but where? I live in Finnland, I have the P8B WS, Is the IPMI really worth aprox. 200€ for me or do I miss somthing else allso?

Despites the fact that the Asus MB P8B WS might be mistake I tought that I could order everything else now so IF I happend to find that X9SCL-F somewhere - I might will order it :)
I don't get it what do I got for buying USB 3.0 and 16GB because of the "recomendations" suggest "ok 8GB should be fine, if its reliable". Because of the Sandisk suggestion was there I took the one with longest warranty (because for me it ment that the manufacturer trusts that product) So I picked Sandisk Ultra http://www.sandisk.com/products/usb/drives/ultra3/ USB 3 External to internal cable to securely attach the USB inside the chassis.

Is there reason why not to buy WD RED WD30EFRX or is there better HDD for that 120€?

Damn my cover is blown, does this mean that i cant be stupid jackass anymore?
Mid MAY it's in toukokuu 5, from german you would get post package in 2 days, and motherboard warrantys would be so easy to handle to germans. o_O
Edit: yeah, its kindof foolish buy old x9 motherboard, that you can get newer board at same price + new 60e processor.

I should learn months names in english... Mid March (2015.03.15) I absolutely mean. Yeah, I could get things faster but it usually mean more spending and I have no hurry to screw up.
I didn't order supermicro yet. At first I willn't transfer the NAS full of my unique pictures and videos and start trying things out. My plan is to build it on before April and then https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/building-burn-in-and-testing-your-freenas-system.17750/ test, try out, learn and then do it again :smoke: backup and then screw with the pool and then restore. If I'm ready to trust my heart and soul to FreeNAS I should also try to minize the user error aspect :smoke: ps. probably trying also powerloss... If the test do not show that I really need the supermicro MB I might - at least now stick with the asus and IF the pool survives 10 powerlosses by my hand - it probably survive some more...?

I'm taking step back and forth with the UPS thing.
There allways will be the risk that the pool will crash for some reason? Like Power loss from the wall, or from the broken PSU, or broken memory module or MB or at least fire or meteorite - I just wonder that the UPS just stiks tovels to one leaking hole on the hull. I simply can't afford EATON online ups, redundant power, double everything in two different locations with 3 mirroring with backups. There should be some point that I should say "thats enought for me, if shit hapends it's going to hapend".

What I allready have readed ZFS should not suffer from PSU braking, or powerloss - it might need fixing but it most likely will not fail.
http://blog.solori.net/2010/07/15/zfs-pool-import-fails-after-power-outage/

Is the ups really a necessity or is it only good to go with and for better uptime reliability?

UPSes have always been recommeded for servers. ZFS doesn't negate this recommendation. It should be somewhat impervious to sudden losses of power and crashing of the server, but you know Murphy...
