They also had the STBD4000400 on the shelf for $199 when I was there yesterday. The main problem with the 5K4000's they have is that they were probably manufactured over a year ago, so that'll eat into the warranty period a bit.

Also worth noting that NewEgg has the ST4000DM000 at $189, with sales as deep as $159, and some lesser sales as well. So if you want cheap 4TB drives, you can just wait a few weeks and watch the sales. The 4TB'ers are coming down in price.

Really??? It's been a while since I was in the tech retail business but warranties were based on sale date and not manufactured date. I once bought an IBM laptop that was on demo at my store for 2 years and I was still able to claim next day air repair service under the manufactures 1 year warranty. It was denied until I sent them a copy of my receipt. Have they changed this policy?

Technically, they are supposed to honor the warranty from date of purchase, but most of the hard drive manufacturers make it difficult or impossible to change the warranty date based on your sale date. Many require that the serial number of the hard drive be printed on the receipt(which I've never seen on any of my receipts).

That has never been the way it works for hard drives. Some manufacturers will extend the warranty if you can provide an invoice from an authorized reseller, but recent trends have been to try to limit liability by requiring the serial number to appear on the invoice, etc. But by default, hard drive warranties are from the date of manufacture, and you are best off taking that into account.

Luckly, where I buy drives locally always has serial numbers on receipts. And they're good enough to reprint a receipt if I need it later too. Even years later they've looked up (old) sales for me, and been willing to print a copy if I needed it.
