Hello!
I'm Alan, a retired computer professional. I'd been using a 2TB Netgear Stora as my NAS for quite a few years. It served me well, but was starting to find it too restrictive. I went through he usual dilemma of build vs buy and came to the conclusion that you get more bang for your buck if you build your own (besides...it's fun!). I've build PCs in the past, so that wasn't a issue. I finally built the following:
It's all up and running quite sweetly now. But I'll shortly have a few questions on jails and best-practice that I'd like to ask the forum. A big thank you to the freeNAS team!
Cheers,
Alan

I went through he usual dilemma of build vs buy and came to the conclusion that you get more bang for your buck if you build your own (besides...it's fun!). I've build PCs in the past, so that wasn't a issue. I finally built the following:
- Fractal Design Node 804 Black
- Silverstone Strider 40W Modular SFX 80+ Gold
- Supermicro X10SDV-4C+-TLN4F-O Intel Xeon D-1518
- 16GB Kingston 2400 DDR4 ECC
- x2 SanDisk Ultra Fit 16GB USB3 (OS Mirror)
- 16TB RAID1:
- x2 Seagate BarraCuda 4TB
- x2 Seagate IronWolf 4TB
It's all up and running quite sweetly now. But I'll shortly have a few questions on jails and best-practice that I'd like to ask the forum. A big thank you to the freeNAS team!
