Hello all,

This is my first post in the forum and I am happy to be here!

So, I have been researching a lot on the perfect part list for my FreeNas box and have come to a point
where I need your help.

I am considering supermicro-x10sdv-4c-tln2f as the mobo for my build and have a few unused RAM (Hynix 16GB DDR4-2400)
that I would like to use. Unfortunately it seems that the supermicro board does not support DDR4-2400 RAMs.
Checked on pcpartpicker where it says memory type is DDR4-1600 / 1866 / 2133 and not 2400.

While as in another thread in the forums here it says DDR4-2400 is supported for Crucial RAMs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You should be using ECC ram, in all likelihood ram that you had sitting around is not ECC.

With that said the ram will likely work but not run at 2400 speeds. But remember that using non-ECC ram in your build has the chance to eat your data. I would suggest using the non-ECC ram for a desktop computer, selling it to buy ECC ram, or giving it to someone else so they can use it for their system.

Hello!

Thanks for your reply.

The RAM is infact ECC. Here are the specs:

HMA82GR7MFR8N-UH - STORAGE CAPACITY: 16GB
MEMORY TECHNOLOGY: DDR4 SDRAM
NUMBER OF MODULES: 1 X 16GB
BUS SPEED: 2400MHZ DDR4-2400/PC4-19200
DATA INTEGRITY CHECK: ECC
SIGNAL PROCESSING: REGISTERED
CAS LATENCY TIMINGS: CL17
RANK FEATURES: 2RX8
VOLTAGE: 1.2V

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
FORM FACTOR: 288-PIN RDIMM

Does that mean I could theoretically use a DDR4-2400 RAM on a motherboard with reduced speed?

Thanks!

Hynix memory is OEM in many Dell servers. I would expect it to work as long as the system has support for registered RAM.

Hynix is one of the big three DRAM manufacturers. They're just as fine as Samsung and Micron, 99% of the time.

If it works, it works. If not, it didn't hurt to try.

I don't know what country you are in, but if you are in the US, you would likely find a better value by purchasing a second hand server from eBay instead of buying new. The price of RAM, especially DDR-4, is elevated right now due to a supply and demand issue that I think is an artificial attempt on the part of the vendors to make more profit.
A system like this, as an example, already has 128GB of ECC memory installed and all you need to do is add drives:
