Long time IT with a background in Windows, Linux and AWS. Taking my first jump into FreeNAS, after using a commercial NAS for quite a few years. Looking for better storage support, better performance and cloud backup features to support my photo catalog as well as some personal documents. FreeNAS seems to fit the bill. I've been spending some time with a small VM and VMDK based storage just so I can get used to the interface and how things like creating/mounting/restoring from snapshots work, as well as shares, etc. Better to screw something up in a lab than after I have real data on a system.
Planning on running FreeNAS as a VM under ESXi 6.5 using pass through for a SAS controller. Everything is working fairly well so far.
Anyway, that's my intro/story
