Hello! I'm studying TrueNAS now.
I don't know how to operate it, so please help me.

I want to add a disk to an existing pool and set it as a hot spare.
However, I can't find "Upgrade Pool" in the Storage > Pools > cog menu.

The documentation below states that new "ZFS feature flags" are needed.
But I don't know how to do it. Can anyone tell me?

Thank you.

  • Hardware: HP N54L (AMD Turion II Neo)
  • Memory: 8GB
  • HDD: 500GB * 4 (No1-3 is RAIDZ1. No4 is RAW disk now)
  • OS Version: TrueNAS-12.0-U7

Hello - welcome to the forums!

This link https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/819-5461/6n7ht6qvt/index.html is to the only documentation I recall seeing that talks about managing hot spares. It covers the adding and activation of hot spres to an existing pool. As far as I know it will work with today's OS version, but I have not tried it - ymmv.

With respect to this operation that you want to perform, "Upgrade Pool" is not for that purpose. "Upgrade Pool" is to upgrade the ZFS Feature Flags of a pool that is still using those of an earlier version of ZFS. That option will not appear if you are using the latest version of the flags for your OS version.

Because many users may want to try the latest version of TrueNAS but preserve the ability to be able to roll back to a previous version if some aspect of the new version doesn't work for them, the update of flags is a manual operation. Once activated, it is impossible to roll back to a TrueNAS version that uses the earlier ZFS flags. So, many of us don't upgrade our flags unless we find we need a specific flag feature from a newer version or we are absolutely convinced we will not want to roll back to an earlier OS version.
