Disclaimer: I read the rules and this is my first posting. I hope this is the right place to begin; apologies, in advance. :)

I use FolderSync on my LAN with OwnCloud and WebDAV; works great. I'd like to get it configured (add a connection in the app) to access my files while not at home. I have tried some port forwards and cannot get it to work. FYI - I have OwnCloud in a PBI Jail (192.168.0.1/24), FreeNAS (192.168.0.200/24), and my local (and only) d-link router (192.168.0.250).
The OwnCloud Jail can ping and tracert to the router and the router can ping and tracert to the OwnCloud Jail. I can also tracert to the Internet (i.e., 8.8.8.8) from the OwnCloud Jail. Can someone guide me on an approach to sort out the issue - tp get the configuration worked out?
Thank you.

You would port forward 80 or 443 TCP to your owncloud jail IP.
Also, sometimes port forwards don't seem to be working when trying to access from inside your network, because your router will only NAT connections that actually are hitting its WAN interface. You could change this behaviour with NAT reflection.

Thanks for the quick reply/ideas.

I am trying the remote access with a non-LAN device (Android, WiFi off, using application Folder Sync)

I tried forwarding ports: 80, 443 to my PBI jail (192.168.0.1/24) and no joy - error message: Bad Request.
Do you know what are the high level steps for setup of remote OwnCloud in a Jail? Something like:

Install OwnCloud PBI ; install
http://lanaddress/owncloud ; to configure
LAN router: Port Forward....Open ports 80,443, 8900 (unused port number) to 'lanaddress'
Access/test

I can't get it to login successfully - remotely http(s)://internetaddress:8900 with Folder Sync app (timeout)
I can login successfully- http://192.168.0.1 with Folder Sync app
I can access/login my port forwards to other (like an IP Camera) ; I am familiar with port forward process, etc..

I'm assuming you made a mistake by stating your owncloud jail is on a subnet (192.168.0.1/24) and not a single IP address?

Yes I know the high level steps
  • static IP for your jail
  • port forward
  • (optionally) dynamic dns for your external IP

I'm not sure why you would forward 8900 for owncloud?
You can always confirm if your port forward is working by using an external port checking site, or by accessing your externalIP:port using a smartphone on 3/4G.

Also to note, on certain routers port forwards don't seem to be working when accessed inside the LAN without setting up NAT reflection.
