Help! Just one of my client machines can't connect

Hi All,

First post on here. I have a strange problem: FreeNAS works just fine for me, except I can't connect to my server from one of my machines.

It's really strange because I can ping the client from the server but not the other way round. The client is a Fedora 22 box and has just been built. I am using wired ethernet with a fixed IP which is assigned by the router.

It's as if the server is blocking the IP address because if I used wireless from the same client, everything works fine. In fact, if I reboot the FreeNAS server, as it boots, I can see some pings going through. Then all of a sudden they are stopped as the server comes fully online.

Any hints would be most gratefully received! I have searched online and on this forum and so far come up with nought.

Does the client come with a pre-enabled firewall?

Yes - but I am not sure how to turn it off. Not new to Fedora but I am to this version and things have changed around quite a bit in the last 18 months since I was an active user of it!

I would be surprised if a firewall would make a difference - why can I ping for a short while during server bootup and then not? Why can I ping from the server to the client but not vice versa. I can ping all other hosts on my network from the client...

Try running the following as root or use sudo.
system-config-firewall

I have disabled my firewall. No change. As previously stated, I would be surprised if the firewall on the client was the issue. After all, I cannot ping the server from the client, yet I can ping the client from the server!

So, as I type this, I have fixed it, but not in the way I want - I have changed the IP address of my client and now it works. Why would a specific IP not work with the server?

Wrong netmask on one of them? Another machine with the same IP as the client?

It's the simplest things, isn't it? For some reason there is another device on my network with the same IP. I have no idea what it is (embarrassingly)!

Easy mistake to make! Presumably the other one wasn't set from the router.
