New to NAS, new to this site. I just installed FreeNAS 10 RC1 in a vm using Virtualbox. I will try to play with it as much as possible before buying hardware. I still don't understand a lot of options or features. Hopefully I will find answers to my questions or guides to have a better understanding.

Things I have in mind for my new project: using owncloud, having a backup system for data and OS recovery and maybe using it as mediacenter.

For using Freenas 10 with Owncloud and Mediacenter you will need Docker-Containers or a VM.
If you have problems testing with Virtualbox I can recommend VMWare Player, because for testing VMs and Docker you will need VT-x support inside the VM (nested virtualization) and I'm not sure if Virtualbox supports this.

But you will recognize this very fast, just look for "CPU VM Support" in System Overview (should be "Full").
