I live in Sweden and have been working withs PCs and servers since early 1990´s
I have experience from Novell Netware 3.1x and from Windows NT 3.1 and newer.
Have several Microsoft MCPs, work nowadays mostly with HP servers running windows.
I look more and more into Linux and Linux-based stuff. My firewall is a pfsense since at least a year. I have also customers running that. My TV-computer runs XBMC natively and my sat-reciever is linuxbased. My love for Linux grow stronger every year...
I now need a NAS for saving movies, software, television recordings and surveillance cam recordings onto. I have 3-4 cams that I want to record.
I have begin to buy hardware for this NAS and any recommendation and tips is appreciated.
Supermicro X9SCL+-F -mainboard
XEON E3-1240v2 3,4-3,8GHz with 8Mb cache and 4 cores
32Gb (4x8) ECC Kingston 1600Mhz
5 x Seagate 2TB Enterprise NAS disks 7200 rpm
Qlogic Fibre Channel PCI-E 2462 (4gbps)
The chassi will be an old ATX chassi for now
Some 8Gb USB memory for FreeNAS
Should hyperthreading be active?
I was thinking of running FC-4gbps between the NAS and my main computer and simultaneously connect the NAS to my LAN too.
RAID-Z using ZFS is my plan, and disable double-storage-checking-something. (dedupe?)
Compression should be active
Any problem using my setup ?
What throughput should I expect?
