Hi,

Setting up and playing with my first freeNAS ZFS system for home use. I mess around with lots of IT at work as well; though more as a perl developer.

Over the years I had migrated through an ICYBOX 2x 0.5TB RAID1 system circa 2004, followed by a G-Tech 2x2TB RAID 1 system (circa 2012). I now have a new 4x6TB Raidz2 FreeNAS system running on a HP microserver. I intended to archive stuff it now and again as well as using it as an Apple Time Machine server.

In each case these were rarely used backup or archive devices, installed in an attic. I was initially happy with the RAID1 approach but as the disks got larger it just cant cope. Raid1 is just no good. The ICYBOX raid seemed to be permanently rebuilding and I hadn't a clue what the 5 year old G-Tech was doing.

ZFS is the forward - for the moment....
