I've been reading about FreeNAS for many years and took the plunge last year. So far absolutely no regret. System very stable, software updates going with no issues. Even survived a boot disk failure 2 weeks after I decided to mirror it. Replaced my first failed drive (it was >5 years old) in encrypted pool without any issues.
Following hardware recommandations, reading the docs did the trick for me, it's well laid out.
I particularly enjoy the Supermicro server board with IPMI, latest version running on html 5 so compatible with modern OS & Browsers.
As background, over 20 years in IT world, mostly in telecommunications engineering and architecture.
