I just joined the forum. My particular areas of interest are a FreeNAS LXC/LXD container image (I would like to have one.) I am running Ubuntu 1604 with ZFS and LXD, and would enjoy the simplicity of setting up file shares on a FreeNAS container if it doesn't turn out to be more work than just setting up an SMB container. I already have ZFS (sadly you no longer have a monopoly) and am mostly interested in the web UI management that FreeNAS offers, and not having to perform setup manually for CIFS and NFS sharing services. I am documenting my project on my weblog. I will be adding SSD ARC and LVM2 caches as funding permits, and plan to add an additional 16TB ZFS enclosure soon. My goal is to have it all done this quarter. This system is running LXD (full OS containers) and each new VM I fire up only takes about 12.4MB of space on my ZFS array, so I am free to create and play around a lot.

How do you plan on running FreeNAS, which is freebsd based, in a Linux container?

That hadn't actually occurred to me. I guess I would need to run it using libvirt. I guess FreeNAS doesn't offer anything I can use now that you mention it. No Linux kernel. Too bad. FreeNAS has some nice things to offer too.

BSD makes me sad... :(

Have a look at open media vault, or switch to using FreeNAS as the host and use freebsd jails.

I am unable to Juju manage and deploy services using FreeBSD jails as a provider. They are also not portable and cannot be migrated between hosts easily. I will take a look at Open Media Vault.

Thanks for the pointer.
