Is there any news on what the performance of ZFS will be like on SCALE vs CORE?

Long story short - how does ZFS performance on SCALE compare to CORE? I'm very wary of ZFS on Linux now after being scarred by my Ubuntu 18.04 experience with poor performance. No bugs but just stuff is noticeably slooooower. THANKS!!

The actual OpenZFS software and algorithms are the same. The OS is different. SCALE is much less mature.

TrueNAS 12.0 CORE and Enterprise have been thoroughly tested on a wide range of hardware and performance issues have been identified and resolved. Many of those issues included drivers.

SCALE is just entering BETA. The focus is on stability and functional quality. Once that is complete, then performance testing can begin in earnest. Typically, it's a focus of the Release Candidate phase. We've seen generally good performance in the lab, but we expect there to be issues that have to be resolved. We'll appreciate the help of the BETA testers to identify those issues

Hi folks, I think I'm now ready to jump into SCALE, some questions that may seem dumb beforehand though:
-Can I import my ZFS Raidz from my Ubuntu 20.04.02 server, which uses the openZFS PPA for latest version? And vice versa, to go back to Ubuntu from SCALE should it be necessary? Should be no problem in theory I know, but am I missing some strings attached?
-I would like it to not have to change the existing SAMBA shares on my client devices. Is that possible?
Example: smb://NAS-STORAGE/STORAGE/ -->
NAS-STORAGE --> hostname
STORAGE -->name of RAIDZ samba share
-When I now install the nightly, can I update it to BETA? How is the update path from now on up to release?

Thanks in advance! I waited since the first announcement for this. And now that I'm forced to re set up my NAS, I would prefer to go to SCALE instead of Ubuntu again and then a week later to SCALE..
:)

Afaik, no. Stick with beta 21.06, and subsequent beta/rc releases through release.

As for the rest: Yes. No feature flags in Linux that scale doesn’t support, afaik. But don’t upgrade the pool flags after import; if you want to go back, you need them unchanged.

You can give the server a hostname that matches what you had previously, and you can map SMB paths the way you want them.

Thanks Yorick, then its time to load the ISO and make the jump to SCALE! :)

EDIT: Oh you mean to wait until 21.06 BETA arrives? Will i not be able to update from 21.04 ALPHA?
EDIT2: Just installed 21.04. All good so far! Import of pools worked without issue, same as setting up my SAMBA shares.

Only one question: In my RAIDZ pool i have around 2 dozen datasets, all encrypted with the same password. Is there a way to decrypt them all at once without the tedious process of entering the password dozens of times? Especially as i would have to do this daily, because i shutdown my media NAS at night.. With cockpit project+cockpit zfs manager i could do this easily. Only thing that i miss. Other than that, its been a great UX even at ALPHA stage! Can't wait for BETA and RC!

I haven’t played with encryption. I know you can decrypt child datasets in one go, and you can change encryption to be key based instead, which means TrueNAS will decrypt the drive automatically when starting.

Yeah my pool has only encrypted child datasets, the pool itself is not. Will just setup a new pool! Thanks!

I've been testing 21.04 for a few days now and really like it. All of the features I use in CORE are there. The UI feels snappier and is imo better organized.

Well done!

Figured I would report back that the ACL’s I set in CORE did not interfere with anything on SCALE. The ups service errors are annoying. Had to just disable the service because of the comm errors.

this should become a sticky some where, so everyone can check it quickly :)

but looking forward to 21.06, hope that there are some problems gone which
are bugging me (crossing fingers for: HDD sleep working, NextCloud integration not finished/polished, for instance)
NextCloud app don't have any changes yet, because until now iX is focusing in the the webui/middleware (as they should).
Apps are something that can be patched/fixed at any time or by other catalogs. I really prefer iX keep working on the middleware/webui instead of Apps.
The faster we hit release and the more polished it get, the more app maintainers will attract and start creating app catalogs for all to enjoy :)

Yea, we know that this BETA will be a lot of folks first impression of SCALE, so we're taking that extra week to make it the best it can be :)
My first impression of SCALE is not even a good one - it won't even let me create a pool from the GUI. Three mirrored VDEVs in a pool should be no problem for it. Anyway - will check back at the next milestone release and see how we fare then (I posted screenshots in another thread)

So you need to crosspost because you encountered a bug no-one-else has encountered. This seems like needless spamming to me.
