I only use my NAS for archival data therefore I only use it every couple of days(once a week). So my question is would it present a hardship on my hardware if I turn it on every couple of days opposed to leaving it on all the time

Yes and no... :)

By its very nature, FreeNAS is a server platform intended to be up 24 x 7 x 365. There are maintenance tasks that it needs to run regularly: scrubs, SMART tests of the disks, etc. These chores don't get done if the box is turned off.

That said... I suppose you could leave it turned off most of the time and only power it up for a few hours once a week when you need it. But the onus would be on you to insure those essential housekeeping chores get attended to - or suffer the possible consequences down the road when a disk goes South!

If you use it every other day or so, I'd say just leave it turned on.

In any case: it's your property and we live in a Free Country, so you can do whatever you like!
