Hi all, looking for some help with the errors I have started to receive on my FreeNAS box, and specifically what the SMART data might be able to tell me. For a while I would get this error emailed to me every once in a while:

Code:
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): WRITE_FPDMA_QUEUED. ACB: 61 08 e0 1f b3 40 95 00 00 00 00 00
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): CAM status: ATA Status Error
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): ATA status: 41 (DRDY ERR), error: 10 (IDNF )
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): RES: 41 10 e0 1f b3 40 95 00 00 00 00
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): Retrying command

More recently I also get an error like this:

Code:
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): WRITE_FPDMA_QUEUED. ACB: 61 08 78 cb a9 40 9d 00 00 00 00 00
> (ada4:ahcich4:0:0:0): RES: 41 10 78 cb a9 40 9d 00 00 00 00

Searching this error on the forums here I found that it might be a SATA cable issue, so I replaced the cable and the error still appeared. I now realize it's probably a drive issue, and ran SMART tests to see what's up. I ran short and long tests on all my drives, and they all run with no errors. Below is the result on drive ADA4:

Code:

My main concern is line 193 Load_Cycle_Count, when searching this forum I have not yet seen such high values. In this thread:

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/cam-status-ata-status-error.16833/

it was deemed to be a potential issue on the drive. My concern is that I have such high values on all my drives. Running the SMART test on them all, they all have similar values, even though none of the others give me any errors (actually, ada5 gave me an error once in 2014 and once a few days ago).

Not sure why I have such high values, I have my drives on all the time and they should not be spinning down:

The only thing I can think of is that in my BIOS I enabled staggered drive spinup, but my understanding is that just makes it easier on the power supply at boot.

Anything I'm missing with my setup that could be causing this? Or a way to determine if the ada4 drive I can have WD RMA? Thanks!

LCC is high, but not critical. Your drives must be from the infamous batch that was flashed with the wrong idle timer. Use wdidle or the red-specific tool to change it to 300 seconds.

But that's not the cause of your problems.

The only thing unusual with that SMART log is the small number of logged SMART tests. Did you only start running them recently?

I assume the drives are connected to the Intel PCH SATA controller, right?

You're right, I haven't been running regular SMART tests yet. I will be setting that up, it's been on my to do list since I built the server (no excuse for waiting so long, I know). The drives are connected to the on-board SATA ports. I will look into changing this idle timer, or is it something I should address with a firmware flash?

Nah, you can't even find new firmware versions for most disks. Just change the timer, that solved the problem for everyone afflicted.
By the way, what's the manufacturing date on the drives? Circa December 2013?

Don't forget the scrubs.

It'll take you five minutes to set them all up. 1 to actually set the settings and 4 trying to remember on which weeks you're running scrubs and which weeks have SMART long tests.

Yeah, scrubs I have been running since day 1 so I am covered on that, I just need to figure out how to schedule the SMART tests so they don't conflict with my every-three-weeks scrubs.

I bought the drives in early Dec 2013, so not sure what the manufacturing date is, but sounds like it would be close.

So should changing this timer setting resolve my issues with the ATA Status Error as well? Or will it just keep the SMART result from growing as fast, but I still have to deal with the drive itself somehow? Thanks for your quick help by the way!

No, that part is a mystery, unless other drives show something useful on their SMART logs.

Could be bad power or a number of other things.

Hey all, just to update on my issue. I ran the wd5741 firmware utility on the drives that allowed it, which was 5 of my original 6 drives. I haven't yet seen if the LCC values have stabilized a bit, but what has happened is that my ATA errors have gone away. This was on the ADA5 drive, that was starting to have errors more often. The ADA4 drive I replaced, but since the SMART tests never found anything wrong with it, I think it might be good after the firmware flash as well. I might try it out once another one of my drives starts to fail.

Anyways, thanks for the help!
