I've been kicking around tossing more and more disks into my HTPC system. I keep it in the basement on the ceiling shelf under the TV upstairs so all the cables will reach. Its not pretty. The thing has gone through 3 motherboard upgrades and a few power supplies and two cases. Nowdays it's just a box keeping the 8 sata disks off the mb and holding a pcie video card. Its time for a change--like maybe NAS.

I've been looking around--here and at Nas4free and other options. The thing is, I like this forum. You guys have really spent some time and effort to make this place decent. I like that noobs that come in and want to talk about what RAID card to use on the new box they are making will actually receive some pointers to the the right information in among the flames that come back at them.
That said, I've decided this is where I belong and I've ordered a used poweredge C2100 to start out with. I'm hoping to cut down the HTPC to client status soon.
Glad you all are here, and hopefully I can bring something of value along in the process.

C2100 is a great choice. You'll probably want it in a place that has some sound proofing (at least a closed door).

Yea. It can live in the basement along with the cisco switch that tends to scream when it gets hot too. I thought about moving the c2100 out to the garage, but the basement is really just a root cellar affair and stays around 55 - 60 all year. It's damp too--something we pay money for in our data centers at work.
Have to see what the c2100 looks like when it arrives. My wife keeps the can goods down there, along with some house plants. I'm not going to be allowed to keep anything that's obnoxious to plant life there
