So I built my first freenas machine a bit ago and currently have 4 disk. Two are 500GB and two are 1TB. I have two volumes, where each are raided for redundancy. I will be adding more storage later. Anyway everything was working fine until maybe a week ago. I mostly use this for comics, pictures and music storage. I have CIFS shares enabled and if I try to open a picture or comic from my windows machine it completely freezes. I can download the picture or comic to the local machine and then it works fine but accessing it straight from the server isn't working anymore.

The only recent changes I made were setting the HDD standby time to 20 and advanced power management to level 1 since I'm not accessing the server constantly. I've tried rebooting but still the same problem. I'm pretty new with this so I'm not sure what else it could be.

Thanks

the users pc freezes,?, you scrubed the volume?, do you hear the hdd moving while accessing files?, I notice the windows explorer may hang when waiting for a response, I disabled those features in disk management, what about using the guest account in read only

Yes it's window's explorer that's hanging up until it ultimately goes to not responding and closes. It's the user's PC's that freeze, not the server. I hear the hdd start up when I connect to the server but not much when trying to read from it. Definitely hear it when I copy something over from the server to desktop.

The server is:
AMD Sempron 145
Asus M4A77TD motherboard
Asus 6450 gpu
Antec 450 watt PSU
8GB Kingston RAM
2 x 500GB hdd 7200rpm
2 x 1TB hdd 7200rpm

I tried connect with an hp laptop and the same thing happened but mostly I use my desktop which is:

AMD FX-8350
Asus crosshair v formula-z mobo
MSI 7950 gpu
corsair 850watt psu
16GB corsair RAM
128gb samsung 840 pro ssd
1TB hdd

Two thoughts... not sure how valuable they are for you but here goes:

1. That's a single core CPU. Those should be left in the past with the pre-Pentium-D time period. I personally would never use a single core CPU in any computer I build and I'm not sure how well your system will perform or if your issue is related to resource limitations or not. ZFS can be a CPU hog and CIFS is a single threaded application. I'm not sure how smart the server design is forcing both to share a single core.
2. The only other thing that comes to mind is that you have some kind of tweaks or configuration issue responsible for your problem on the server. It could be a CIFS configuration issue, a sysctl, tunable, etc. I'm not sure if you have any kind of registry tweaks you use as standard practice on Windows, but if not then your issue is almost certainly server-side.

Edit: Did you enable jumbo packets?
